Honolulu, HI (December 24, 2013) – USO Hawaii helped a soldier surprise his family at the Hawaii Bowl with a moment they’ll never forget. Army Master Sgt. Larry Metcalf, who had been deployed for nine months, showed up at the game, surprising his wife Wendy and their two daughters, 9 year old Madison and 12 month old Sarah. The family had no idea MSgt Metcalf was returning home, just in time for Christmas.
MSgt Metcalf was in the middle of his eighth tour overseas when he reached out to USO Hawaii to help him pull off the surprise reunion. Through the partnership of Papa John’s Hawaii and the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, USO Hawaii arranged the soldier’s family to be the recipients of the Papa John’s ‘Best Seats in Da House’ promotion, where the Metcalf family was treated to seats on the field and complimentary Papa John’s pizza. When the pizza was delivered, the delivery man revealed himself to be MSgt Metcalf. MSgt Metcalf had not seen his family since his youngest daughter was just a few months old.
“What an incredible moment,” said Kristin Tierney, USO Hawaii Programs Manager, “to reunite a family on Christmas Eve. These are the moments that matter for our troops and their families.”
